It's been a while since we updated the blog! There's been so much activity on the Germantown-Schnitzelburg Facebook Page that we've been hanging around and posting pictures over there. Last night, though, there was a great meeting of the new Germantown-Schnitzelburg Pub Club, so we thought we would post some photos.

the Pub Club is an informal group that likes to get together and support our local pubs and restaurants by meeting up to eat and drink! This month's meeting was at Pauly's Schnitzelburg Pub. Pauly was a great host and Danny Mac's Pizza generously donated several pizzas!

Olivia's on Goss-Now Michele's on Goss

Louisville Hot Bytes is reporting that Olivia's on Goss is under new ownership and is now Michele's on Goss:

As of this past Monday, Michele Brinke is the new owner of the restaurant in the Goss Avenue Antique Mall. It has been renamed Michele's On Goss. Chef Travis Hall has moved on to another location and will focus on his school nutrition business. Michele will now be working with my new Sous Chef Philip Hess.

Michele says, "I'm very excited about this new venture and chapter in my life. The menus will change somewhat with more focus on our brunch (which is killer) and creating a lighter lunch menu with daily specials, homemade desserts and soups."We will have a new website and Facebook page in a couple of days so then our menus will be online. We still have over 3.500 square feet of banquet and meeting space and a outdoor deck area that is being redone to include a chef's herb garden. We will also start up adult cooking classes again in the near future."

The shrimp were plump and plentiful, the eggs pefectly poached and the sauce flavorful with a little kick of spice. The Hara Center is expanding! They have signed a lease on the back apartment at 1039 Ash, effectively doubling their space. These photos show some of the rooms that need work. More community events, including a teen art program, are coming.

Today as I was leaving for work, a man headed into the 19th Hole Pub gave me a pastry from a big tray he was carrying into the bar. "Here, take it to work with you," he said.

Since I have lived in Schnitzelburg, I have gotten homegrown produce from neighbors, had other neighbors push my car out of a snow and ice slick, and now a pastry on the way to work. This proves my theory-you never meet a stranger in Schnitzelburg.

Schnitzelburg Dog Walk, Oct. 3

The 2nd Annual Schnitzelburg Dog Walk will be held on Saturday, October the 3rd. It will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at 1020 East Burnett Street. The kickoff starts at 10 with a blessing of the pets, and another blessing will follow at 11. Maps will be available for self-guided walking, or come for one of the blessings, which will be followed by guided tours of the neighborhood.

This year we would like for folks to consider bringing new or gently used items for pets that will be donated to Metro Animal Services.

The City's budget cuts have drained the funding for Schnitzelburg's Senior Center. This Center means the difference between your senior neighbors having a place for fellowship and health and educational programs or being left high and dry without the cameraderie that has become so important to their well being and sense of community.

A big thank you goes out to all who attended the Metro Council open forum and signed the petition to help keep our senior center open. Unfortunately though, the work is not done! WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP!

I recently asked David Domine, aka The Bluegrass Peasant, if he would like to share his divine schnitzel recipe, and luckily he obliged! David is a fantastic local writer, and if you haven't had a chance to check out his book, Adventures in Kentucky Cooking with The Bluegrss Peasant, I suggest you seek it out!

Austria. Wherever you go in this small alpine country of some 8 million inhabitants – from the grand coffee houses and rustic farmhouse restaurants of Vienna in the east to the mountain inn chalets and lakeside cafés in the western part of the land – one dish is sure to make an appearance on the menu: Wiener Schnitzel. For most speakers of English in this country, it’s a somewhat exotic-sounding word with nonsensical overtones that conjure up nostalgic images of a bedirndled Julie Andrews twirling herself around a mountaintop meadow or the ever-hungry, bumbling Sergeant Schultz on Hogan’s Heroes, but the dish itself is a rather ordinary concoction in the culinary world.

Versions of this meat-scallops-coated-in-breadcrumbs-and-then-fried standard can be found in many countries around the globe, and chicken-fried steak or breaded pork cutlets would count as distant American cousins of what many consider the quintessential Germanic staple. Roughly translated as “Viennese Cutlet” in English, Wiener Schnitzel has origins that have become somewhat clouded by the sands of time, but many agree that around the 16th century it most likely arrived in Vienna, the imperial capital of the Austro-Hungarian empire, from nearby Italy, where it was known as cotoletta alla Milanese or Milanese cutlet. Since then, it has been a staple of Germanic cuisine.

Whatever the background of this popular dish, the preparation is relatively straightforward and just to prove that you don’t have to be a Colonel Klink or a Baron von Trapp to enjoy it, here’s a simple preview recipe from my latest project, The Bourbon Cookbook. Although traditional Wiener Schnitzel calls for veal, pork is regularly substituted, so I’ve incorporated the other white meat in this Kentucky-fied update of the Austrian original.Bluegrass Schnitzel by the Bluegrass Peasant
1 ½ pounds pork scallops, pounded thin

¼ cup bourbon

2 large eggs, lightly beaten

½ cup all-purpose flour

1 – 1 ½ cups fresh breadcrumbs

2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard
Salt and ground white pepper

1 cup canola oil

1 lemon

Place the pork cutlets in a shallow baking dish or a plastic zip lock bag with the bourbon and let marinate in the refrigerator for 2 hours. Once the pork has marinated, remove the cutlets and pat them dry, combining the leftover marinade with the two beaten eggs. Set a cast iron skillet with the canola oil over medium-high heat, and place the flour, egg mixture, and breadcrumbs in 3 individual separate shallow dishes, in that order. Brush each cutlet with mustard and season with salt and pepper.

To prepare the cutlets, dredge each in flour, shake off the excess and dredge through the egg mixture before coating thoroughly with the fresh breadcrumbs. (To ensure an even crust, make sure to firmly press the crumbs onto the pork to make sure they adhere.)

Once the oil has heated enough so that that the end of wooden spoon starts to sizzle when inserted and placed against the bottom of the pan, add 2 or 3 schnitzels to the pan, frying on both sides till golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer each cutlet to a plate lined with paper towels and place in a 250-degree oven to keep warm. Repeat until all the cutlets have been used, garnish with lemon wedges and dig in. For an authentic Austrian dinner or lunch, serve the schnitzel alongside a green salad and French fries or with steamed white rice studded with peas. Or, for a great sandwich, slip a schnitzel between the halves of a sliced Kaiser roll and enjoy.

On Saturday, May 9, The Hara Center hosts an evening of drumming and dancing. Drumer Zach Fry will be on hand to teach some basic rhythms, and participants are encouraged to bring a drum and play along. The event costs $5 and takes place from 1-3 p.m.

Most things are getting startes around 5 or 6 p.m., and everyone needs to be off the streets by midnight! The City has been good to us for years about permits and such, let's return the favor by not littering and keeping the neighborhood looking great for all to enjoy.

Schnitzelburg area general meeting tonight

A representative from Louisville's Solid Waste Management department will be speaking at the general meeting tonight, April 27, 7 p.m. The presentation will focus on recycling and how we can "live greener." As usual, the meeting will be held in the cafeteria of St. Elizabeth's church on Burnett Street.

Our friends in Phoenix Hill are looking for talented people to perform at their farmers' market, so I thought I'd pass this along:

Dear music-related friends,

The Phoenix Hill Farmers' Market is going well again in its 3rd season. We have a good customer base and wonderful vendors. The Steering Committee is currently trying to find ways for the market to take the next step from being a great farmers' market to becoming a great neighborhood gathering place as well. We are hoping to add some new features to the market, and one of those is some sort of cooking demonstration and/or music/entertainment each week.

We are trying to schedule a local music performer/entertainer at each of the Farmers' Market days for the rest of the season (through October 27). The market is every Tuesday from 3 - 6:30 p.m at 829 E. Market St. starting May 12. We are thinking maybe that the person/group would perform from 4:00 - 6:00 (but are flexible). They can open their guitar case, fiddle case, basket. etc. for tips. If they have CDs, they can set up a table and sell them. We are unable to pay anything at this time, though we are trying to figure out ways to compensate for their time and talent. The farmers are usually very generous at the end of the market day as well! We are hoping to get a calendar together soon, and get it out in the media. Please feel free to send this to anyone that you think might be interested. If you are a musician/entertainer and are interested, please let me know.

Schnitzelburg Area Community Council general meetings are generally held on the last Monday of every month at St. Elizabeth's Cafeteria at 7 p.m. We usually have a community leader, someone from the Louisville Metro Police Department or a speaker that can talk about home improvement or sustainablility there to give a speech and answer questions.

What would entice you to join us at these community meetings? Would a potluck be fun, or too much work? Are the meetings too early or too late? Is there an issue in our neighborhood that you would like someone to address? Please let us know!

Costumed Art Party at The Hara Center

On Friday, April 17 from 7 p.m. to midnight, The Hara Center is hosting a party featuring art by Michelle Kellond Amos. Amos's fun little voodoo dolls will be on sale for $8 apiece. Bring kids, instruments, friends and a dish or bottle of something to share! Hara Center proprietor Kelly McCarthy will be turning 35, so be sure to wish her a happy birthday!

The Kentucky chapter of the Community Associations Institute (CAI) is hosting an educational seminar on April 15: The Foreclosure Crisis and Your Community Association: Financial, Legal & Management Tips & Techniques. Forum members of LouisvilleHotBytes.com visited Flabby's on March 7 and enjoyed the famous fried chicken, as well as other specialties like oyster cocktails and shooters, rolled oysters, fried chicken livers and pretzel sticks. The German-Paristown Neighborhood Association has been hosting potlucks for the last several months and they've become quite popular! Folks bring everything from traditional yummie casseroles and fried chicken to tofu curry and home made salsa. So its veggie friendly too!

If you were sad like I was when Jockamo's closed, you will be happy to hear that there is a glimmer of hope. I noticed on the door of the restaurant today that the previous "on vacation" sign has been traded out for a "opening soon" sign. I hope they're not just pulling my leg!

Now if someone would just open a super awesome restaurant in the old Germantown Cafe location, Goss Avenue would be swinging again!

SACC General Meeting Features Meth Lab Presentation by Officer Dean Sturgeon

The February SACC general meeting featured an informative presentation by Officer Dean Sturgeon of the Louisville Metro Police 4th Division on the dangers of meth labs.

Some telltale signs of a meth lab are:

-Strong chemical odors
-Large numbers of empty pill bottles or blister packs
-Propane tanks with blue corrosion on fittings
-Stripped lithium batteries
-Soft drink bottles with hoses attached
-Excessive amounts of trash
-Large quantities of drain cleaner, paint thinner, toulene, denatured alcohol, ammonia, starter fluid, antifreeze, hydrogen peroxide, rock salt or iodine.

The Metro Police Department recommends that if you suspect a property may be an illegal lab, you contact them and stay away from the area. Meth labs present dangers from explosion and exposure to hazardous chemicals. Visit www.drugfree.org/Meth for more information.

Fire at the Old Hickory Inn

How sad! Not many details at this point, but the area is blocked off for blocks all around. WHAS is reporting that there were no injuries.

Courier Journal reporter Jessie Halladay reports on the fire:

"Old Hickory Inn, a bar that has been a landmark of the Germantown area for decades, was destroyed by fire this afternoon. Firefighters received multiple calls about the fire around 4:10 p.m. and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the building at 1038 Lydia St.

The cause of the fire is unclear but it was complicated by a broken gas meter that fed the flames and by alcohol in the bar area. Sgt. Sal Melendez, spokesman for Louisville Fire & Rescue, said the fire “proved to be very challenging. Alcohol and flames don’t mix.”

It took 40 firefighters about an hour to get the fire under control in the two-story building, which was unoccupied when the blaze started. The second floor of the building was vacant. No one was injured in the fire, Melendez said. An older neighbor was evacuated from her home next door as a precaution, but the fire did not spread to the residence.

David Hoffmann, who has run the bar for about 10 ½ years got word of the fire while he was at his home. “I’m destroyed. I don’t have no insurance,” said Hoffmann, who did not own the building.

A neighbor, Dave Sidebottom, 40, said he had lived in the neighborhood his entire life as he took photos of the damaged building. He said he recalled his grandfather going to the bar at the corner of Hickory and Lydia streets. “It’s always been a tavern, like a landmark. I hate to see it go,” Sidebottom said. At least eight firefighting trucks were on the scene. Arson investigators were also present, seeking a cause of the fire, which is normal procedure."

The Hara Center Plans Clothing Exchange for Sunday, March 15

Now here is something worth planning ahead for! The Hara Center at the corner of Ash and Hickory streets is planning their next Naked Lady Party for Sunday, March 15, 7-10 p.m. There is a $5 suggested donation to help support the operations of the community center.

They are inviting their neighbors to clean out their closets and drawers for this women's clothing, book and jewelry exchange. What a great motivation to get started on that spring cleaning!

Well, it's nearly spring and Germantown is gearing up to plant the community garden for the second year in a row. Last year we received a Brightside grant to create two raised bed gardens. We are looking for folks to help us plan and plant again this year. We're adding compost bins and much more! We hope to do some canning too! If your interested let me know.
